Stewart,
Your headers show you're using a web interface to newsgroups. Which portal (URL) are you using? If it lists the newsgroup I added you may be able to enter it just by clicking on the link to it in the header of my message.

What alternatives do I have?

Do your two OS share drives? Something I would try if you don't get any better ideas would be printing to file and then printing the file with the OS which can operate your printer. Actually I suppose another possibility on the same tack would be emailing yourself the file and then receiving it and printing it on the other system.

Robert Aldwinckle ---

I took this past weekend to configure Windows Vista Beta 2 (WVB2). I am growing to like it save for printer support. I have an HP printer and have spoken with them via email. They have no plans to support WVB2 and will not support until formal release of the product. Now I do need to print. The XP driver fails for my printer at the installation point of the operating system saying invalid parameter. I think WVB2 thinks its related to a browser installed on my system I can not find using registry editors and search. (T-Mobile something. I go to the site recommended at it is in german). Since the XP driver won't work, What alternatives do I have?
Would a file from a valid XP disk serve to provide support for printing?

Thank you for your assistance with the ideas you provided. I have one operating system on my computer. I took the plunge and went to Beta2. It seems to be functional except for the printing aspect. What I may very well end up doing is reinstalling after I put the printer driver back on and "upgrade."
Respectfully,
Stewart H. Spanier

Also
on a side note: Why is this forum so full of NON Printer, Faxing, Scanning posts?

I have been wondering the opposite. Why are so many printer users posting questions about installing printers on Vista in the IE newsgroup?
In fact there are so many of them and since they are all using a web interface to newsgroups that I am wondering if there is a bad link in one of the portals.

Ok 2 different things happen:
1. If I click on the link in your message header I go to a page that says Help and support The small window says "Windows Vista Newsgroups" but the rest of the windows / areas are blank.
2. If I click on the link at the bottom of your post I go to "Windows Vista, Printing, Faxing, and Scanning" group. But at the bottom it says it only has 2 pages. The "Printing, Faxing, and Scanning" group I came from has 306 pages.
I also notice a slight title difference. Window Vista, Printing, Faxing, and scanning versus Printing, Faxing, and scanning . Curious?
I am using Windows Explorer 7+ to view the news groups.
I hope this helps,

That's the URL I asked you for first or perhaps more importantly I'd like to know where you linked to it from.
E.g. this one which is where you posted originally is actually titled General Discussions under Windows Internet Explorer. That's newsgroup's archive now has 307 "pages".

Yes. That's why I am requesting details so I can understand how it is happening. <w>
BTW did you know you could also use your Vista's Windows Mail app to read newsgroups in NNTP?
Use this server if you want to try that. I'll give you the link that OE could use but I'm not certain if WM can use it the same way or not:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/
E.g. if that doesn't work as a link for WM strip off the news:// prefix and use the rest as the server name for NNTP news.
In OE you could then just type c.w vist to see all the Vista newsgroups listed (for English readers.), pick ones you want to "subscribe" to, etc.

Similar problem with my RX500. Would print with XP drivers but tried to install scanner stuff and vista 32 bit, threw a real wobbly. The scanner then showed up in device manager. Do not try to install from the HP discs - it will not work - the drivers will not install. At the "Printers" window from the control panel click on "Add a Printer". Be sure your printer is USB connected and turned on. Follow the wizard to add a printer. The key seems to be that the USB printer port should be selected as a "Virtual Port" (not the USB DOT4 Port). Pick the HP manufacturer and the model closest to your printer's model number. Once the correct driver and the correct VIRTUAL USB port is selected the printers both seem to work correctly for me. Hope this helps.

Yes. If you'd like to use the web interface to access the proper newsgroup you would need to use a different portal such as this one.
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan&cat=en_US_9CA88DDB-D18D-FA0E-A366-6E527B0FBA67&lang=en&cr=US
Or just use a real newsreader, such as your Vista's Windows Mail app by copying and pasting this link into an IE Address bar
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
In OE this would create a news account and open it in that newsgroup. You might want to customize your account before posting with it. Hopefully WM does the same; otherwise just use the server name and the newsgroup name separately in whatever way they do allow them to be used. Similar parsing of the above URL would need to be done by most newsreaders other than OE too because it is not a standard syntax.
In any case I suggest that all users of the Help portal who want to post to common newsgroups such as this one and the other 5 at the bottom of the list here
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx
consider also crossposting to Vista General Discussion too. That way you will probably give your post a better targeted readership. It will also allow Vista users to find your information by searching there. E.g. when Vista posts are made only in the provided common newsgroups all of their information may be lost to Vista users who only try searching on their Help portal.
BTW to find out how to cross-post using the web interface you can use the Help link and then do a find for Advanced options

Since I wrote that I have found that in fact such posters can search IE General implicitly, so it's not as bad as I thought and the main disadvantage for them will be that the only effective browsing they will be able to do in here will require that they use very loose search filters such as print, fax, or scan.
Of course the completeness of such search results will in turn rely on all relevant threads using those keywords at least once. I'm not sure but I suspect the search would ignore posts which only used compounds of those word stems. Google Groups has the same problem but at least with it you can search with a Boolean expression which would include most of the matches a stem otherwise would. For example, fax* (if supported) would match fax and faxing; so in Google Groups I would search for (fax OR faxing) to substitute. In the web interface in contrast a user would have to do multiple separate searches using each variation of a stem and then have to deal with all resulting redundancies manually.

I do not see the driver listed for inbox models. There is a problem with some of the Konica Minolta drivers writing data to the port. Here's some more info but bad news until the vendor updates the driver for Vista.

We found this bug with one of the customer's in the Living with Vista program. The customer has a Konica Minolta Pagepro 1350W.
When we plugged in the printer using USB it was automatically detected by Windows Vista and prompted for the disc. We inserted the CD and the Autoplay dialog for the CD came up, but the New Hardware Wizard which was still behind the Autoplay dialog was there and it found the CD as well. It proceeded with the installation and appeared to complete successfully
When we tried to print, all that came up was a File Save dialog. When we went to check the properties of the printer, the port that it was set for was FILE: and we could not change it
We went out to the Konica Minolta websiet and downloaded an updated driver for the printer. With the new driver we were able to select USB under the list of available ports. However when we attempted to print, the print never happened. The printer icon came up in the system tray though.
We tried restarting the spooler and this made no difference.
When we rebooted whatever we had printed before began to print. Then when we tried to print again, whatever we tried to print would not actually print until the reboot.

Please see 1271416, indicating that there are no plans to support this device inbox...will require the manufacturer to provide a Vista driver.

Why on earth are these questions ending up in the Internet Explorer newsgroup???

Because of the link used in Printing, Faxing, & Scanning here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx
I have given you a more detailed explanation in previous posts. Now, I realize (from one of PA Bear's posts) that the OP does not need to see that newsgroup to actually get a reply. If they wanted to get to the correct newsgroup (e.g. instead of using this hit or miss proxy service <eg>) they would have to use either a different web portal or use their Windows Mail (all explained in more detail previously.)

OK, here is the deal. I have been running Vista over a week. The applications work great (although a bit slow, probably beta related) but printing has become a bear. The short story is I can install printers but each and every time I send a job to the printer the follwing events occur:
1)
Print Job From Applications 2) Job Shows Up In Printer Queue 3) Queue Indicates Job is Printing 4) Queue Deletes Job 5) Nothing At All Arrives On Printer
Just so you know I have tried this on both the printers at my office and at home (all HP devices). After spending an hour online searching for a solution I have come to the realization printing is a challenge for most everyone. So I really have two quesitons. First, is anyone else experiencing these sorts of problems. Second, have you been able to overcome them. If so, it would be much appreciated if you could provide the solution details in this forum.
cheers, bkv

Can anyone help with a driver recommendation for my Adaptec SCSI card? None of the previous Win drivers seem to work with Vista. The installer keeps saying it won't recognize any and I cannot find anything specific for an XP driver. Any ideas? Thanks, Michael

Where or how did you get a "Virtual Port"? I don't have that as an option.

I have two HP Photosmart printers (a Photosmart 375 and a Photosmart All-in-One 3310). After much trial and error I have been able to get both to print by using the embedded drivers that came with the Vista Beta2 disc.

That's because the web portal to newsgroups you are using doesn't include the most relevant newsgroup (assuming anybody is using it.)

E.g. copy that link to your address bar to have that newsgroup open in your Vista newsreader app, Windows Mail.

I installed Vista RC1 on a HP nc9230 and have been using it every day. From the start I noticed my default printer changing to another printer. I had about six loaded so after a few weeks of VIsta changing the default printer, I started to delete what Vista decided to be my default. It still did not help, my default printer would not stay. I finally had it down to three printers and the default held for a few days but today it is now changed not to the one on the bottom of the list but to the one on the top. When Vista changed my default printer it did not always pick the top or the bottom of the list. I also tried to find an answer for this but the only thing I found was this group posting. Maybe Microsoft will this resolved in the final release but till then I have to keep looking where my print job is going each day and make the correction for the day.

this should be fixed in build 5722

I have both machines with the same Network Workgroup. I have them all on static IPs connected to a Linksys WRT54G Router. My laptop is connected via an Intel 2200 Wi-Fi Adapter. Both computers have the same User name and both have the same password.
When I try to add the printers via add printer wizard, it sees both printers but when I try to actually install them it tries to connect and says Access Denied.
I also tried to just browse to the computer and right click on the shared printers and chose connect. Still Access Denied.
Anyone who had this find a solution? Anyone know how to solve this. If you do, I bet you could make many dozens of people, hundreds of people happy.
Thanks.
BTW I am using 5728

Hate to Burst your bubble here but this is one problem you aren't going to solve easily. The issue isn't "where is the printer .inf filë?" It's the fact that you CAN'T run a 64bit driver on a 32bit OS. Especially not a Kernel Driver like a Printer inf. Windows XP WILL NOT install it. That's why you get the "Can't find a Suitable Driver" Error. Only reason I know this is I tried doing the reverse, Printing from a machine running Vista X64 to a printer attached to an XP machine running on 32 bit. Same Error. You need to go to the printer properties for the Vista X64 machine an click on Sharing tab, Click on Additional drivers button at the bottom and install the 32bit driver locally on vista. Then when the XP HOME box tries to connect it should theoretically just pull the 32 bit driver directly from the vista machine. BTW you've got to make the driver you're installing is actually the 32bit version and not X64. You might end up having to contact Cannon for the right driver.

no succes.
I clicked on add a network printer, then clicked on find a printer in my network, found it in my network list, selected it and clicked Next.
Next i got a message that says; Making connection with the printer; you are about to make a connection with a printer on MY NETWORK, there will automatically be installed a printerdriver on you computer. In printerdrivers there can be hide virusses or scripts that can have harmfull consequences for your computer. It's important that you trust the computer that offers you this printerdriver. Would you like to continue?
Then i clicked yes and get the following message. Making connection with the printer; The server for the printer Canon Inkjet i965 doesn't has the right printerdriver at it's disposal. Click OK if you want to find the correct printerdriver. Otherwise click Cancel and take contact with the networkadministrator or supplier and ask the right printerdriver.
When i then click OK i get a window to manually locate the printerdriver file, it says; The file *.INF on (unknown) is necessary, type the pad to the file and click OK. I have then already tried selecting the Canon Inkjet i965 printerdriver (i965.inf) for windowsXP provided by Canon without succes. When selecting that i965.inf file i'm getting the following error message. Windows can't find a suitable printerdriver. Take contact with the administrator to find and instal a suitable printerdriver.
It still doesn't work to add my printer hooked up to WindowsVistaRC1-x64 on the XPhome-x86 computer. What can i do?
note: The Windows messages that i wrote here are translated from dutch (the XPhome-x86 computer is a dutch version)
Best regards Dennis

Dumb question, Where are you trying to install the 64bit drivers? if it's on the xp box, you might have a problem with getting it to recognize the install path metioned unless you actually go in and Share that Particular folder on the network. Otherwise XP won't be able to see and hence won't connect to that folder. Easiet way to get the drivers into xp is download them to the XP machine direct from HP, then when it asks where the drivers are you just have to point to the local inf file rather than trying find it on the network.

That is easy. You will need to point to the x64 Vista installation (you can't extract them off the disk).
\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\prnhp001.inf
Easy!?

"denj" wrote in message I have an HP 1200 laser. Works like a champ when hooked up to Vista RC1 x64. Works like a champ when hooked up to XP SP2. But I want to have it hooked up to XP (32-bit) and share it so that I can use it on Vista (64-bit) and one of my other XP systems at home.
How do I do this?
I can see where to add x64 drivers in XP, but I can't tell how to actually do that! It asks for the driver locations, but I can't actually find them. Are the drivers buried in some sub-directory of the Vista x64 disk?
Any help is appreciated!

I think, with this concentration on XP Home, you are barking up a wrong tree. The people using XP Pro have exactly the very same problem. I am one of them.
It is impracticable for me ta attach the printer to the Vista machine. But I am sure it will be accessible to the XP machines. By the way my USB printer (Brother HL2030) installs OK on the Vista Machine. Surely this is a Fudgey solution. Certain people have multifunction printers, they would not like having to access all those copier and scan functions over tne lan.

Oh well, Just an idea. I've got a similar post undr the network & Sharing forum and someone there had mentioned it. They also mentioned the guest acct in XP home being how it "shares the printer." You might wanna try enabling it on Vista. Again, just an Idea. It didn't work for me, but who knows? You might have better luck. Let me know.

My uneducated guess would be that Vista Home Edition -might- support "simple file sharing". Since most of us are evaluating Vista Ultimate... I think not.

"Jordan H." wrote in message You Guys aren't alone, I've also got the same issue. I'm wondering if it's because XP HOME edition uses "Simple file sharing"(lol) and Vista is actually running "Network Discovery" witch is reallty tantamount to XP PRO File Sharing. Anybody know how to turn Simple File Sharing on in Vista? Can You?

OK... I just assumed that since I couldn't get to a shared printer on XP Home, but could on XP Pro, that Home was the issue. And it could still be an issue; you may have other issues that are preventing you from sharing a net printer on XP Pro. Just a thought...
